Friends Awarded a
"Save America's Treasures" Grant!
In October 2005, the Friends were awarded a prestigious federal Save America's Treasures (SAT) matching grant of $550,000 for replacement of the leaky, over-aged roofs and related seismic strengthening of Maybeck's 1910 masterpiece, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Berkeley.
Receiving such an important grant is a great honor, and an affirmation of the national significance of the church. The SAT grants are designed to preserve America's cultural heritage. In 2005, $15 million was awarded to 61 organizations and agencies chosen from the 337 grant applicants. The National Park Service administers the program. Maybeck's church, designated a National Historic Landmark over 25 years ago, has again been acknowledged as one of America's cultural treasures.
Thanks to generous gifts from many donors, the match was made and the work in the 1910 Church completed in 2007.
Now we are raising funds for the roof and seismic strengthening of the 1929 Sunday School. A Getty Foundation Architectural Conservtion Implementation Matching Grant was received in 2006 for this work.
We have now raised 2/3rds of the $2.6 million goal for the preservation work.
