| In a unique competition described as “the architectural equivalent of the hit show American Idol,” the public voted on-line for their favorite among 25 preservation sites in the San Francisco Bay Area during six weeks in Fall, 2006. The Church came in first place with 18% of the vote! |

| The “Partners in Preservation” competition was a joint effort of American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to help fund preservation of significant sites in the Bay Area. Twenty five sites were selected to participate. Thirteen awards were given. American Express pledged $1 million to be divided among the 13 sites. The top vote getter was guaranteed an award. A Committee of Advisers decided the rest. |

| The Friends requested funds for seismic strengthening of the south wall of the 1929 Sunday School and received $118,000 for the project. The wall is faced with “Bubblestone” a lightweight concrete product that Maybeck admired because of its fire resistance, but which has little structural strength. The “Bubblestone” will be carefully removed and replaced after a 10” Shotcrete shear wall is installed. |

“Bubblestone” is a lightweight, air-entrained concrete product that Maybeck favored for its fire-resistance. Strengthening the Bubblestone wall of the Sunday School is the top priority need for the seismic strengthening of the Sunday School. With the help of the “Partners in Preservation” grant, the Bubblestone cladding will be removed and 10” of concrete will be installed to strengthen the wall. The Bubblestone will then be reinstalled. |
